Graduate Name and Surname: Sonnur KINDAÇ

Graduation Year: 2022

1. Can you tell us about yourself and your educational background?
Hello, my name is Sonnur. I had previously studied Computer Programming. After that, I worked in patient admission at private hospitals. Since I liked the healthcare system, I wanted to develop myself further, so I decided to study Health Institutions Management and then Medical Imaging.

2. How was your experience studying at Istanbul Arel University?
My first year was online due to the pandemic, and I studied the second year with a hybrid system. Graduating was wonderful, but I didn’t want it to end.

3. How has your career journey progressed after graduation?
For a while, I pursued KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Examination), but after not getting the score I wanted, I thought about what I could do next. I did voluntary internships at a subcontractor company to learn MR and CT, and after 6 months, I started working.

4. Which sector and position are you working in now?
Currently, I work in a subcontractor company at a state hospital in the CT department.

5. What was the reason you chose the Medical Imaging Techniques Program?
Actually, after working in patient admission for 5-6 years, I got bored, but since I love the healthcare field, I didn’t want to do anything else. So, I looked for a department within the healthcare system that I could love, and radiology really seemed like a good fit for me. That’s why I chose this field, and I’m so glad I did.

6. Which courses or practices during the program helped you develop your professional skills the most?
Many courses are important, but Anatomy was especially crucial because knowing where each tissue or bone is located helps you learn and adapt better.

7. What were the most significant experiences during your internship period?
I realized that the job is not just about learning or knowing things; it is also about patient management, communication, and crisis management.

8. What were the biggest challenges you faced during your education, and how did you overcome them?
The first year being online due to the pandemic was very strange for me. While trying to adapt, the next year we switched to hybrid learning, and adjusting to school caused me some anxiety. Fortunately, with the help of the instructors and my friends, I overcame this issue.

9. How was your job search process after graduation?
At first, I didn’t know what to do or where to start. Unfortunately, many hospitals were looking for experienced technicians, which made me feel inadequate. Later, through a friend, I found a voluntary internship at a subcontractor company to learn MR and CT. After 6 months, I worked continuously like a full-time employee and eventually got hired. I succeeded in what I wanted, and I truly love my field and my job.

10. What kind of tasks do you perform daily in your current job?
I only work with the CT machine. Sometimes, I prepare the patient and then perform the imaging.

11. What were the biggest challenges you faced in the field of medical imaging after graduation?
I always say that those who know anatomy succeed. I realized how much I was lacking in my anatomy knowledge, which made things very difficult for me. But I improved myself and learned to associate diagnoses and diseases.

12. What is the moment you are most proud of in your profession?
Actually, there isn’t just one. Sometimes, I show doctors the diseases in the images, but the thing I’m most proud of is when patients thank me and approach me with genuine warmth.

13. What advice would you give to students who want to work in medical imaging techniques?
Education is extremely important. Please, do not underestimate this process. Don’t think that you’ll learn everything after graduation. Take all the courses seriously. Everything you learn will be useful in your working life.

Sometimes, after a shift, my sleep schedule can be affected, but I adjust my sleep accordingly. Other than that, it doesn’t really impact me much.

Honestly, I really love my current job. My only wish is to be appointed and continue in my profession.

Graduate Name and Surname: Ece SEVGİLİ

Graduation Year: 2022

1. Can you tell us about yourself and your educational background?
My name is Ece Sevgili, and I graduated from the Medical Imaging Techniques program at Arel University in 2022.

2. How was your experience studying at Istanbul Arel University?
I completed one year of my studies online due to the pandemic and the other year in person. Thanks to my valuable professors, I was able to finish my studies productively.

3. How has your career journey progressed after graduation?
After graduation, I applied to many hospitals in Istanbul. Without being picky about experience, I started working at a private institution. I also worked as an external technician at an imaging center I had previously contacted. After working at both institutions for a while, I became very tired. I left the private institution and continued my profession at another hospital.

4. Which sector and position are you working in now?
I am currently working in the healthcare sector as a radiology technician.

5. What was the reason you chose the Medical Imaging Techniques Program?
Throughout my education, I always dreamed of working in the healthcare field and being part of the medical team. After learning about the profession and its opportunities, I decided it was the right fit for me.

6. Which courses or practices during the program helped you develop your professional skills the most?
The courses that were most beneficial to me were Medical Imaging Methods, Medical Terminology, and Anatomy. These were also very helpful in my professional life.

7. What were the most significant experiences during your internship period?
Since I did my compulsory summer internship and voluntary internship at a large hospital, I had the opportunity to see and experience many different types of imaging. The biggest experiences for me during the internship were imaging procedures with contrast agents.

8. What were the biggest challenges you faced during your education, and how did you overcome them?
Like every student, the midterms and finals were the most challenging. By taking regular notes during the semester and reviewing them before exams, I was able to pass my courses efficiently.

9. How was your job search process after graduation?
After graduation, I had concerns about the future like every new graduate. However, I was able to reinforce what I knew and learn new things through voluntary internships during my second year. The internship experience was very beneficial because I knew more than other graduates, and even without professional work experience, I was able to perform many imaging procedures as an intern. As a result, I was hired based on the imaging techniques I had learned. I graduated in July and started my career in October.

10. What kind of tasks do you perform daily in your current job?
I perform imaging procedures using devices such as Portable X-Ray, Digital X-Ray, Panoramic X-Ray, Mammography, CT (Computed Tomography), and MRI.

11. What were the biggest challenges you faced in the field of medical imaging after graduation?
Like all my colleagues, we deal with human health. Even the smallest mistake can lead to unnecessary radiation exposure for the patient, and sometimes the medications given during the procedure can lead to life-threatening situations. The most challenging situations for me are imaging procedures involving contrast agents or when children come in for imaging.

12. What advice would you give to students who want to work in medical imaging techniques?
Do your job with love. Be open to developing yourself and learning. If you’re having trouble finding a job, spend your time doing internships. Maybe there will be an opening at the place you interned, and you’ll get hired. Don’t lose hope.

13. How do you maintain a work-life balance?
I think the work-life balance depends on your adaptation to your job, profession, and the institution you work at. Initially, it may seem difficult, but once your job integrates into your life, you inevitably adjust to it.

14. What are your career goals for the future?
Like every technician, my goal is to be appointed or to work in better conditions at the best private institutions.
