Common Compulsory English Courses

Common Compulsory English Courses are foreign language courses that must be offered, pursuant to Article 5, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph (ı) of the Higher Education Law No. 2547, to students who enroll for the first time in undergraduate or associate degree programs where the medium of instruction is Turkish. At Istanbul Arel University, these compulsory courses are English I (MING101) and English II (MING102) for associate degree programs, and English I (LING101) and English II (LING102) for undergraduate programs.

At the beginning of each academic year, the School of Foreign Languages administers an English I–English II Exemption Examination to students enrolled in undergraduate and associate degree programs. Students who successfully pass the examination are exempt from both English I and English II courses. Students who do not meet the exemption requirements are required to enroll in and successfully complete the relevant compulsory English course(s) offered during the respective semester.

Alternatively, students may choose to attend the University’s English Preparatory Program. Those who successfully complete the Preparatory Program in accordance with the relevant regulations are exempt from English I and English II, and the letter grade AA is recorded for both courses on their academic transcript.

The appointment of instructors, course syllabi, instructional materials, examinations, and assessment procedures for the Common Compulsory English Courses are determined and coordinated by the School of Foreign Languages. These courses are delivered asynchronously through distance education. The asynchronous learning process is administered by the University’s Distance Education Center (UZEM).

The Undergraduate Programs Coordinator is responsible for the Common English Courses offered in undergraduate programs, while the Vocational School Programs Coordinator is responsible for the Common English Courses offered in associate degree programs.

Academic and Professional English Courses

The purpose of the Academic and Professional English Courses is to further develop the listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills of students who have already acquired basic English language proficiency, enabling them to use English effectively in academic and professional contexts.

These courses are offered by the University’s academic departments and programs. Their content is designed in accordance with the specific disciplinary and professional needs of the relevant department or program and incorporates appropriate teaching materials, resources, and effective communication methods and techniques.

The appointment of instructors, course syllabi, instructional materials, examinations, and assessment procedures are determined by the Directorate of the School of Foreign Languages. These courses are delivered through face-to-face instruction.

The Undergraduate Programs Coordinator is responsible for the Academic and Professional English Courses offered in undergraduate programs, while the Vocational School Programs Coordinator is responsible for the Professional English Courses offered in associate degree programs.
