DEFINITION OF PATHOLOGY
Pathology is derived from the ancient Greek term pathos, which means disease, and is used to study diseases using scientific (logos) methods, that is, in the sense of disease science. Pathology, in a broad sense, studies the causes that lead to diseases, and the ways in which they affect tissues and organs, in particular, the morphological features of diseased tissues and organs. Pathology, in this sense, is the basis of medicine. Pathology, after the normal knowledge learned in histology, anatomy and physiology, makes it easier to understand diseases by adding abnormal appearances of diseased organs with the naked eye or under a microscope. In those areas where the image helps a lot to make a decision, the contribution of the pathological examination to the diagnosis and the determination of the appropriate method of treatment is also very great.  Pathological examination is necessary and mandatory for the accurate diagnosis of many diseases, especially for the diagnosis of tumors. Only those who have completed Faculty of Medicine can become medical pathologists.

HISTORY
The Department of Pathology was established under the structure of Surgical Medical Sciences in 2020, when our Faculty started its education and training. Prof. Dr. Uğur Çevikbaş is serving as Head of the Department.

COURSES OFFERED IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY
Pathology is included in the “Surgical Medical Sciences” according to the legislation of Council of Higher Education.. Courses in Department of Pathology at Faculties of Medicine are teached as General Pathology (Class 2) and Special Pathology (Class 3). Pathology course is taught as a course to the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry, the Vocational School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation and the Vocational School of Nursing.

Pathology is one of the largest and the most difficult courses in our faculty. In these courses, we teach the properties of tissues and organs both theoretically (course) and practically (laboratory). In practical practice, the macroscopic appearance of the play, its description, its appearance at the microscopic level are examined and information about the case is presented, and the diagnosis is made. In addition, if appropriate, students will have an autopsy performed. We have enough tools in our pathology laboratory.

When the tissue comes before the pathologist for diagnosis, it goes through many stages. If the diagnosis is difficult, special dyes are applied or a consultation with another pathologist is performed.

OPERATIONS PERFORMED IN THE PATHOLOGY LABORATORY
Material comes to the pathology in the form of tissue or liquid smear. It is placed in a fixative solution so that the tissues do not deteriorate. Then the tissue is subjected to processing, blocked, cut 4-5 microns, stained (routine staining is hematoxylin-eosin.) During surgery, the diagnosis is made in 10-15 minutes by frozen section in the operating room for a condition that can change the course of the operation. Except for H.E., Histochemistry, Immunohistochemistry, Tissue culture, In situ hybridization, DNA cytometry, Digital image analysis methods are applied for diagnosis.

Sometimes a Fine-Needle Aspiration (IIAB) technique is performed without surgical intervention on the tissue.

MISSION AND VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY

Our mission is to contribute to training physicians and healthcare workers who can meet the needs of our country, can undertake the responsibility, are well-trained, have problem solving skills and ability to follow for the purposes of researching, analyzing, interpreting clinical biochemical processes for a clinical purpose, can adapt to the fast-paced technological future.

Our vision is to improve our academic performance with the scientific research carried out and to be carried out in our department, and to be able to represent our faculty in the best way in the national and international meetings.
