Assessment and Evaluation
For general information on assessment and evaluation processes, students can refer to the Associate and Undergraduate Education-Teaching and Examination Regulation. The methods used by Istanbul Arel University for assessment and evaluation are listed below, and most of these methods are aligned with the program’s objectives and goals.
Assessment and Evaluation Methods:
Exams
Students are subject to a final exam in addition to any previously taken exams or assignments. At least one midterm exam is conducted each semester. In addition to midterms, quizzes may be held without prior notice. Evaluation criteria for the courses (midterm, assignment, final exam, etc.) and their respective weightings are provided to students at the beginning of the semester or published on the website. Final exams are conducted on the dates, at the locations, and at the times announced by the university.
The final grade for the course is given by the responsible instructor based on the midterm exam, final exam, in-semester work, and attendance. Courses that do not require a midterm and/or final exam will be determined by the respective department and forwarded to the Student Affairs Office. Final grades for these courses are based on the work carried out during the semester. Final grades, along with assessment criteria, are submitted by the instructor to the Student Affairs Office.
Grades
For each course, the raw grade assigned by the instructor at the end of the semester is converted to the corresponding letter grade based on one of the following evaluation methods: absolute grading, relative grading, instructor’s judgment, or direct grade conversion system.
The ECTS and letter grades and their equivalents on a 100-point scale are shown below:
Score | Letter Grade | Grade Point Average |
90-100 | AA | 4.0 |
85-89 | BA | 3.5 |
80-84 | BB | 3.0 |
75-79 | CB | 2.5 |
70-74 | CC | 2.0 |
60-69 | DC | 1.5 |
50-59 | DD | 1.0 |
0-49 | FF | 0.0 |
Appeals to Exam Results
Students who wish to appeal their exam results must submit an appeal letter to the relevant faculty’s dean’s office within three business days from the announcement of the exam results. After the appeal letter is submitted, the instructor who reviewed the paper must submit their response in writing to the dean’s office within five business days. The revised result is then sent by the dean’s office to the Student Affairs Office for correction.
