Physical medicine and rehabilitation (formerly physical therapy and rehabilitation; abbreviated PTR) is a medical specialty that mainly deals with the diagnosis, conservative (non-surgical) treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal diseases. However, not only the musculoskeletal system, but also physiological/anatomical deficiencies due to congenital or acquired diseases of other systems are of interest to this branch of science. PTR deals with the primary or supportive treatment of neurological, orthopedic, rheumatic and cardiopulmonary diseases that cause pain, loss of function, deterioration in quality of life and addiction in patients of all ages.
(In 1981, the Council of Higher Education changed the names of the departments of “Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation” in university hospitals to “Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation”).
